Roman Numeral Basics

Roman numerals use combinations of letters from the Latin alphabet:

  • I = 1
  • V = 5
  • X = 10

Roman Numeral Rules

  • When a smaller numeral appears before a larger one, subtract it (IV = 4)
  • Numerals are added when a smaller follows a larger one (VI = 6)
  • The same numeral cannot be used more than three times in a row
  • Only I, X, and C can be used for subtraction
